Model II: Data for Aqueous H+ - NH4+ - SO42−

The System

The sources of data used to determine mixture parameters W, Q and U in the activity coefficient equations for this system are listed in Table 5 of Clegg et al. (1998a). Fits of the model are described in section 3.7 of that paper. The following types of data were considered:
  1. Saturation with respect to the solids (NH4)2SO4(s), (NH4)3H(SO4)2(s), and NH4HSO4(s) in the ternary solutions.
  2. Osmotic coefficients of aqueous (NH4)2SO4 - H2SO4 mixtures from isopiestic measurements.
  3. Osmotic coefficients of aqueous NH4HSO4, and of (NH4)3H(SO4)2, from vapour pressure measurements.
  4. Osmotic coefficients of aqueous NH4HSO4, and of aqueous (NH4)2SO4 - H2SO4 mixtures of various compositions, from electrodynamic balance experiments.
  5. Water actiities of aqueous (NH4)2SO4 - H2SO4 mixtures from isopiestic measurements.
  6. Degrees of dissociation of the HSO4 ion in aqueous NH4HSO4 solutions.

Weights

The values listed in the tables below are based upon those used in the fits of the model. However, they have been normalised for each type of measurement so that the maximum weight for a data point in each table is always unity. Points given zero weight are those which either appear to be in error, or are used for comparison only (and were not fitted). Points with a weight of "-" are outside the temperature or concentration limits of the current model, and have not been assessed for accuracy.

The parameterisation of the AIM model for this system was carried out in two stages, first a fit at 298.15 K to obtain parameter values at that temperature, and then a second fit (using data at all other temperatures) to determine the variation of the parameters with temperature. Both sets of weights are listed in the tables below, for those data used in the fits. Other tables, numbers 7 to 10, contain data that were used for comparison only. Here, the weights are either zero or "-" and are listed in a single column.

All fits were limited to molalities of (NH4)2SO4, and H2SO4, less than 33 mol kg-1.

The experimental data are listed in the tables below. Notes at the end of each one define the tabulated quantities, and identify the sources of the measurements.
